Hello, I am working on a game called Animal Memory.

Image

I have spent far too long not telling all of you about it, so I will be adding threads tonight detailing the plan as it stands, individual threads to post about and discuss/detail progress on different aspects. Looking for comments and feedback on everything of course. Things are only just entering production so it's still early yet, you'll be getting a look at some of the earliest stages of the game's development.

In Animal Memory you will be play as the Traveler in his/her* attempt to survive and escape from an unfathomably huge complex called the Spiral. You may or may not come across severed heads of cyborgs that you may then sustain by symbiotically hooking into your own circulatory system. You will do this in the third person perspective, though one suspects you may read this description in the second.

The gameplay emphasis is on exploring, scavenging, planning and executing. Look for a separate thread on the gameplay concepts. Suffice it to say, obscurely, I would like to believe the game will evolve into something of a stealth/survival picaresque. I hope it can live up to my too-cute-by-half elevator pitch of "Hitman meets STALKER."

I wouldn't read too much into the "stealth" descriptor, insofar as a few years back it was a somewhat reliable indicator that the game expected you to think before executing. But now even Sam Fisher is sliding into cover systems.

Which means no, no cover systems or wall hugging or shadows rendering you completely invisible. And I still don't think the game will have any cutscenes--perhaps a traditional intro/outro?

To close out this first post, here are 1920x1200 original resolution crops of the teaser image. If you have a smaller resolution you're going to need to crop/resize yourself for the time being. That's indie development for you. [-]r

By the way, I hope you have a damn good explanation as to how a bodiless woman is able to smoke without a diaphragm. On that head point, I'm reminded of a documentary about soviet scientists doing weird experiments on animals whereby they had somehow managed to hook up one dog's circulatory system to the brain of another, and kept that brain alive.

And what's with the teal and orange? :cod:

I am quite pleased that two people people noticed off the bat. It's a joke, a sight gag. She has no lungs and so cannot speak (audibly), nor smoke the cigarette.
But it is not a normal severed head, it is that of a cyborg, though with an organic brain. Presumably she has some emergency regulators subbing for a lot of the rest of the things that you lose when you're a brain in a jar, but she still needs blood flow. And yes, that has gameplay implications if you choose to enter into this kind of symbiotic relationship.

I am dog tired but there will be more on the cyborg in a little while.

If the pickable (as in, pick from diverse preset characters, not customize, that I know is beyond what I can swing) player character thing works I think there are some interesting ways to work the marketing angle beyond having, say, the "canon" Shepard for marketing material. It's not going to be a game like any of those so I don't see why I'd market it the same way, either. I have some ideas.

That color looks way to far in the purple direction to be teal. I think he is safe in terms of avoiding the stereotype. Using contrasting colors is kind of unavoidable in the visual arts.

What is the gameplay consequence of picking up a head? Do you get a new ability like a Metroid? Is it a percentile boost to your stats like S.T.A.L.K.E.R? Snarky companion that solves puzzles for you like Journeyman Project 2 and 3?

Willing to bet there is no safe way to remove the head. You want new abilities? You are a murderer.

Solidly designed teaser image. Gets across the components of play. I'm looking forward to reading about the actual game mechanics.

Maybe now is a good time to mention that if it's technically feasible, you converse with the cyborg head through a text parser :mameshiba:

Also are different player characters going to have different abilities?

Likely not, but that's me heading off my RPG stat inclinations at the pass. That being said, I would like a very light character creation sequence, or barring that, certain abilities that change over time that carry over to a New Game +

Thanks guys, the title is the longest held aspect of the game other than a few of the kernels as posted in the Spiral thread. I have a text file on my desktop named 'good titles.txt' and all that was written in it was Animal Memory--dated December of '09.
I learned from working at 8monkey Labs on the game Darkest of Days that at minimum I need a game/company name that I wouldn't be embarrassed to say in mixed company or with the gaming uninitiated. I always liked more literary conventions for titles anyway.

Alcoholist: I definitely tried setting it in Helvetica at least once. I tried a lot of different typefaces. I'll even put up a thread about the logotype revisions, come to think about it.

Given the sort of English/colonial Africa vibe I get from the main character, perhaps a woodcut title caps typeface would be a bit more apropos? I thought it was just the 'gausswerks font' used as a placeholder.

Much love if you make all the bad guys non-smokers.

The haircut/cigarette are pure SHINE ON HARVEY MOON.

Good title, interesting image, interesting pitch.
